Los Angeles may be the movie capital of the country, but after scanning the list of upcoming Fall Film Festivals in NYC, you’d never know it! With showings almost every weekend, you’ll be saying goodbye to mainstream theaters and turn your attention to independent films. Who knows, you may even take a break from Netflix!

Here’s the lineup of NYC film festivals happening this fall, and quick written trailers of the five we’re most excited about. Grab your popcorn, put your feet up, and enjoy the show!

Brooklyn Horror Fest: October 14th-16th

Is there a better way to get in the Halloween spirit in New York? The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival is packed with weird dramas, sci-fi, and horror films – so everyone will have genres to choose from. Besides movie screenings, there’s Q&A with filmmakers, ghost storytelling, and parties stocked with food and drinks. Screenings and events will be held across Brooklyn at The Wythe Hotel, Syndicated Theater, Videology, Muriel Schulman Theater at Triskelion Arts, Spectacle Theater, Catland Books and Throne Watches.

Tickets: Individual tickets range from $3-$18

The Dog Film Festival: October 15th

Is it a surprise that the Dog Film Festival is our favorite? We mean, who wouldn’t fetch a friend and head to a film festival all about dogs! The event returns to Symphony Space at 95th & Broadway to educate guests on pet health and wellness, the importance of adoption, and the philosophical aspects of having a dog in your life. With themed programs and documentaries about pooches and their people starting at 11am, check out local dog care to keep your four-legged friend entertained all day. Do you want to help local shelter pups? Well… You already are! The Alliance for NYC’s Animals will receive 50% of all ticket sales.

Nordic International Film Festival: October 20th-22nd

Held at the renowned Scandinavia House on Park Avenue, the Nordic International Film Festival celebrates international films with strong characteristics and story lines. See first glances of new and upcoming films while honoring credited work from established filmmakers. With an emphasis on diversity, you’ll see worldwide films from worldwide views.

NYC Food and Film Festival: October 20th-23rd

Buttery popcorn and sweet candy during a movie is great, but imagine being able to taste the food you see on screen! The 10th annual NYC Food and Film Festival lets you do just that, creating the first multi-sensory food and film experience. With chefs curating local and foreign dishes from movies, this multi-day, competitive event is the most delicious film festival this season!

Chelsea Fashion and Film Festival: November

This moonlight film festival doubles as a human rights benefit gala featuring Freedom Ladder, who strives to protect, educate, and empower children. Hosted by MTV’s Sean Lynch, The Chelsea Fashion and Film Festival on 296 9th Avenue will showcase the most tasteful short films and chic fashion designs, all chosen by festival directors. While tickets have not been released to this exclusive event just yet, you do have time to pick up an outfit at these top shops in the Upper West Side!
